NSF puts $100M into regional AI compute

The U.S. National Science Foundation launched a $100 million program to support up to 10 state or multistate AI infrastructure hubs for scientific research. The program announcement says consortia will pool universities, government, industry, and philanthropy to expand access to compute and data; the solicitation makes clear that NSF funds coordination, technical staff, and training while each consortium must secure the actual infrastructure. For research-tool builders, this broadens the compute market beyond hyperscalers described in Amazon’s $220 billion capacity buildout, but the near-term opportunity is selling interoperable software and support into regional consortia—not assuming the federal award itself buys accelerators.
