Elite AI field engineers number just 2,000 in the US

Only about 2,000 US engineers combine the sector knowledge, executive credibility, and applied-AI skill needed to produce consistent enterprise returns, according to a Christian & Timbers hiring study reported by TechCrunch; the firm projects demand for forward-deployed engineers will rise 2,100% by year-end. The research draws on more than 250 C-suite hiring executives across 180 companies, a survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives, and interviews with more than 300 field engineers. The shortage puts a hard labor constraint behind OpenAI and Anthropic’s forward-deployed services strategy: operators should build implementation knowledge internally rather than assume a model vendor can always supply the scarce humans who make agents work in production.
